This paper proposes a reinterpretation of inland areas from an economic-managerial perspective based on entrepreneurial cultural ecosystems theory. Starting from the analysis of ecosystem theories from the entrepreneurial (Isenberg, 2010; Stam, 2015), tourism (Volgger and Pechlaner, 2015), and cultural-and-creative-industries related (Borin and Donato, 2015; Kim et al., 2016) perspectives, inland areas are then interpreted as cultural and creative ecosystems, highlighting the link between culture, creativity, and other socioeconomic sectors and reflecting on the role that each ecosystem component (public, private, or community) can play for the development of the area itself from a governance and management perspective. After an overview of the theoretical evolution of the concept of entrepreneurial cultural ecosystems that links to analyses of cultural districts and the studies related to ecosystem governance structures (public-private partnerships and multi-stakeholder partnerships), the paper analyzes the governance systems of two case studies of French entrepreneurial cultural ecosystems in inland areas, which provide various insights into the development of such ecosystems for the sustainable growth of territories.
