This article begins with a social and historical survey of cultural life in Italy during the 1960s and 1970s, marked, with regard to the theatre, by the difficult coexistence of traditional directors with young author-actor-performers, for whom Carmelo Bene was an inspiration. Among the latter, Carlo Quartucci undertook experimental research thanks to the “contamination” between theatre and video, illustrated with many examples here. This new language brought to the fore a reorganisation of the tools for audiovisual communication, in “other” sites for representation, which led to a new relationship with the public.
