The crime genre appears nowadays as a key element in relation to the circulation abroad of Italian TV shows, and the role played by the genre does not seem limited to the contemporary context, nor can it be limited to the production and distribution strategies of specific players. This article aims to engage in an in-depth discussion of the complex role of the crime genre in distribution strategies, with special attention to the interplay between broadcasters, independent producers and distributors. After a schematic mapping, for the last two decades, of both the studies on the circulation of the audiovisual product (section 1), and the relevance of the genre in the transnational circulation of Italian content (section 2), the article will focus on a double case study. More specifically, within the framework of production studies and distribution studies, and through in-depth interviews with professionals in the audiovisual sector, the article retraces the role of the international distributor Beta Film with respect to the Italian production company Cross Productions. The double case study is discussed both in relation to recent TV crime dramas created by Cross and distributed by Beta, in particular Rocco Schiavone (2016-in production) and Il cacciatore (2018-in production), and in relation to some further international successes distributed by Beta.
