The essay examines some aspects of the birth and the rhetorical-argumentative construction of Giovan Mario Crescimbeni’s treatise La Bellezza della Volgar Poesia. It proves the existence of an original project in five dialogues dedicated to lyric poetry, almost completed in 1697. The addition, just before the first edition (1700), of further parts on other literary genres diminished the treatise’s cohesion. The first section is a compact analysis of the lyric genre according to the principles of Crescimbeni’s poetry. The second section is not as organic, concentrating on just a few aspects and aimed largely as an apology for three contemporary Arcadian works. The appendix explains the thematic-argumentative scheme of each dialogue, highlighting their rigid building frame and offering a tool for their precise consultation.
